J-pouch (only people with ulcerative colitis)

<!--StartFragment -->Having a j-pouch means that the inflammed colon was removed and a small pouch was built from the small intestine. This pouch works as the "new colon" and is attached to the anus. There is no pouch outside of the body. If the surgery has been successful and there are no incontinence problems or inflammation of the pouch, all physical activities should be possible.

The risk of dehydration is higher since the colon has been removed, therefore you should drink more than an average person when performing sports, preferably mineral water with some sodium and potassium in it. It may also be a good idea to empty the pouch before an exercise session, even if you do not feel the need to go.
